Due to the presence of Fresnel reflection and strong absorption of light in certain special materials, it is almost impossible to analyze such materials using absorption spectroscopy. In such cases, the most suitable method for studying these absorbing materials is attenuated total reflection. This method is based on the following effect: when light enters an interface between an optically dense medium n0 and an absorbing medium (with a smaller refractive index n) at an angle greater than the total reflection critical angle θc = arcsin(n/n0), the reflection efficiency will be attenuated due to the coupling of the evanescent wave with the surface plasmon of the material being measured. This reflection efficiency depends on the incident angle, polarization direction, and the refractive index of the material being measured. The correct selection of prism parameters (especially the prism angle) will yield good ATR spectra. The attenuation total internal reflection method can be used in the THz spectrum to study the absorption efficiency of the material within the 102-104 cm-1(1 um - 100 um: without introducing 2π) spectral range.
