Introduction to TPX Material
Among a large number of polymers, some are transparent to THz waves with very low reflectivity. Generally speaking, the best materials are TPX (polymethylpentene), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE or Teflon). For long wavelengths, the transmittance curves of these polymers are also very flat. For short wavelengths, mainly < 200 µm, the internal inhomogeneity will cause some scattering and fluctuations. That is to say, polymers show an opaque characteristic for short wavelengths.
Polymethylpentene (TPX) is the lightest of all known polymers. It is transparent to ultraviolet, visible and THZ wavelengths. Of course, it can also be collimated using a He-Ne laser. The refractive index of this polymer is approximately 1.46, and it has little relation to the wavelength.
